June 2026 K-Pop Review: A Mixed Bag of Releases
The summer months are usually a time for K-pop to shine, but June 2026 seemed to be a bit of a letdown. While the first half of the month offered some strong releases, the second half was a bit of a struggle, with many songs relying on outdated trends and poor production. It's a shame, as the industry was on track to have a great year, but these releases have dragged it down.
One of the main issues was the lack of variety in the music. Many songs were just not up to par, with some being truly awful. LE SSERAFIM+ILLIT+Katseye's 'Iconic by Mistake', VVS's 'Bottle', ATEEZ's 'Bad', Evan's 'Ride or Die', and AHOF's 'Sugar High' were all notable for their poor quality. These songs, along with several other 6 and 7-rated releases, brought down the overall rating of the month.
It's a bit frustrating, as I was hoping for some big hits this summer. The first few weeks of July are looking quite barren, with no exciting releases on the horizon. I'm hoping that AHOF can pull off a redemption arc, and there are a few nugu debuts that could be worth keeping an eye on. But overall, 2026 is on track to be one of the industry's most underwhelming years.
Despite the mixed bag of releases, there were some bright spots. SHINee's 'Atmos' was a standout, and it's no wonder it's ranked so highly. It's a strong addition to their discography and a great example of why they are one of the most respected groups in the industry. NCT Wish's 'Boy Meets Girl' and Ryugujo's 'LOVEgurui' were also strong contenders, with unique and catchy melodies that stood out from the crowd.
In conclusion, June 2026 was a bit of a disappointment for K-pop fans, but I'm hoping that the industry can bounce back in the coming months.
